Ernestine Stewart Mitchell Print E-mail
Ernestine Stewart Mitchell retired in 1988 from the Houston Independent School District as principal of Charlotte B. Allen Elementary School after 36 years in the field of education. Her teaching experiences include teaching in Philadelphia, PA,  Angleton, Texas and Houston, Texas. She was graduated in 1946 as Valedictorian of her class from Marshall High School in Angleton, Texas.

The history of Marshall High School and the Colored Grade Schools date back as far as 1879 when Mrs. O. Bryant became the first teacher. The destiny of this growing institution must have been the forsight of its founders. The course it followed from the time of its inception in 1878 to its demise in 1966 had definitely been determined by a power greater than man's fate.

ImageWow! What an evening.  From tears to laughter and back again.  The eighth annual Brazoria County Business Hall of Fame had it all. The evening started with a well attended reception sponsored by BASF, ConocoPhillips, Ron Carter Auto Dealerships & The Dow Chemical Company and featured treats by Café Annice and Del Papa Distributing.

Freeport swears in its new police chief Print E-mail

On Monday February 1, 2010, in Freeport council chambers overflowing with  citizens and other city officials, Tyrone Morrow was sworned in as Freeports new police chief. Morrow, 46,  replaces  Jeff Pynes, who resigned as police chief in summer 2008 to become Freeport City Manager. He will be paid $92,000 a year. Pynes’s salary as chief was $80,000.

Freeport, Texas Print E-mail

The Freeport vicinity is rich in history.   It was a hunting and fishing area for the Karankawa Indians.  Later, Brazoria County was the base for Stephen F. Austin in colonizing Texas.  Prior to the Civil War, it was the site of major plantations that made use of the Brazos River for importing supplies and exporting agricultural products.  Most were abandoned after the war.

Brazoria County, on the prairie of the Gulf Coast at the mouth of the Brazos River in Southeast Texas, is bordered by Matagorda, Fort Bend, Harris, and Galveston counties. It covers an area of 1,407 square miles. Its highest altitude, Damon Mound, is 146 feet above sea level. The center of the county lies at approximately 29°10' north latitude and 95°26' west longitude, near the county seat, Angleton.
